Ever heard of the
Long Tail? Kevin Kelly has a great article on using the Tail to make money as an artist. You can find it on his
blog.
His basic premise is that with 1,000 True Fans any artist can make a comfortable living ($100K annually). Is that true? If so, how much time does it take to cultivate 1,000 True Fans? And is this new professional concept of financially sustainable micro-celebrity really, well, sustainable?
I'm not convinced. It seems amazing that 13 years after the Netscape browser brought the internet to the masses we are still trying to figure out how online distribution of media is going to shake out. The experts always say it will happen in the next five years. Five or fifteen, I guess.
