Find Your Balance Point

There is something to be said for concentration and focus. With the amount of distractions in our work life (and life in general) I keep coming back to the idea that singular focus is the answer to productivity. And I don't mean productivity in an efficiency, Henry Ford way. I mean personal productivity. There are so many things I want to accomplish on a day to day basis and it seems I am always fighting through the white noise of my surroundings (for instance, I have 13 apps and 8 browser tabs open as I try to write this entry). What this gentleman is demonstrating is that with singular focus the obstacles fade away. The impossible becomes possible (no glue required).

These are trying times...

but sometimes a quote like this reminds you that life is to be lived, not feared. Thanks Andrea

“This is the true joy in life, to be used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one, to be thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap. To be a force of nature instead of a feverish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. I am a member of a community and as a member it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can before I die. Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch that I want to make burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.” George Bernard Shaw

What happens when you fund Google-Maltese Falcon arrives in SF Bay

On Saturday Tom Perkins brought the Maltese Falcon into San Francisco Bay. It looked like a 21st century pirate ship emerging from the fog over the Pacific.

We Are All So Unique

I remember in high school when The Gap would put out a new sweater in coral and the next Monday 18 girls would show up in the same outfit.

The myth of individualism is alive and well (and a concept I appreciate) yet this book and website are shedding light on the truth. The most individualistic are also the most formulaic in appearance.

Fight the power.

Don't Bite Me

We ask technology to save us all the time; airbags, spam filters, geo-engineering. Now we have something to keep the sharks away. It's called the Shark Shield. I saw an article about it on SFGate yesterday. Needless to say, as someone who surfs in the Red Triangle, I am open to any solutions that will keep my body in one piece. The Shark Shield appears to be that solution. If you watch the video you'll see that the guy testing the device is VERY confident it will work. That is one big Whitey he is swimming with.

The Answer to High Fuel Prices

Why fly or drive to your next meeting when you can have a truly virtual meeting. All you need is some proprietary Cisco technology, a hologram projector and a weak sense of humor. John Chambers leads the fun.

What would Orwell do?

Apparently this story has been out there for a while. I picked it up this morning off of Guy Kawasaki's blog. A band called Get Out the Clause decided to use the 4.2million CCTV cameras in Britain for more than surveillance. They set up their equipment under 80 cameras around Manchester, played their song and then requested the footage under the Freedom of Information Act. It worked and now they have a pretty cool music video.

I guess this is a pretty decent way to deal with Britain's long arm of the law. You know things have gone pear-shaped when their are 32 CCTV cameras within 200 yards of George Orwell's former flat.
